Helping A Friend

It’s time to make the critical shift from leading the business by yourself to leading an organization of people. At P2Excellence, we help you navigate the uncharted territories of organizational growth with clarity and confidence.

Chances are great that you know someone who is seeking a job or better employment or a different opportunity.  Chances are you would like to be really helpful. And chances are, you don’t really know how to help.

This holiday season I would like you to consider giving the gift of structured support and unabashed encouragement.  My dear friend, Randy Hain has just written a book entitled LANDED, A Proven Road Map for Today’s Job Seeker*. It’s his fourth book and this one offers today’s job seekers proven strategies and very practical ideas for conducting a successful job search. I like the way Randy writes and I value his commitment to helping folks land the right job and to create a career that matches their ambitions and their values.

And here is where you come in.  I’d like you to consider asking your job seeking friend if he or she is open to working with you as a “Job Seeker Friend and Mentor.” That’s not to suggest that your role can match the work of a career coach nor that you can you do the work that belongs to the job seeker himself.

But let’s face it, everyone who is in transition or knows they should be, needs an honest, pragmatic, disciplined, caring, and encouraging friend. You can choose to be that person, and that gift of pragmatic friendship would be a wonderful gift, long remembered and appreciated.

If your friend says “yes” (and I certainly hope they do!),  my next recommendation is to purchase two copies of Randy’s book and agree to an 8 week – one chapter a week – book study. Agree that each week, you’ll spend an hour reviewing a chapter, assigning homework, and going over the results of the work done the week before.

Your friend will move forward in earnest and you will be advantaged as well.  Because even though you may not be actively seeking a change, the truth is that this 8 week review will cause you to clarify your goals, update your network, and activate your intention.  In other words, you will not only be a great support to your friend, you will be an advocate for yourself.  And that’s a good thing!
