Creating a Culture of Discipline

by Nancy Vepraskas  - March 16, 2021

It’s time to make the critical shift from leading the business by yourself to leading an organization of people. At P2Excellence, we help you navigate the uncharted territories of organizational growth with clarity and confidence.
We’re into March.

We have moved through the winter faster than I expected. My colleagues and clients all seem to be saying, “Can you believe it is March already?” The pandemic causes time to move both very slowly and quickly. More importantly, it feels like there is hope in the air. Certainly, there is still fear and discouragement, but just like the daffodils and crocuses, hope seems to be pushing up and preparing to bloom. Thank goodness.

Here at P2Excellence, we are enjoying the work.

Colleagues and clients moving forward to reinvent and reinvest in their careers, their lives, and their brand. They are looking at their proverbial life closet and deciding what they want to keep and what they would like to say goodbye to. We want to avoid keeping everything we took into the pandemic as we come out of it. Change is afoot. It’s time to be nimble and new.

In this issue of Tuesday’s

We’ve provided much to think about. Anne Warren and I are continuing our series of articles on growing your career and growing your brand as experienced by your boss, your co-workers and your employees. We’ve reminded you that jobs serve a purpose for the company. And jobs serve a purpose for your boss. Jobs serve a purpose for your end users, for the people you employ. And of course, they serve a purpose for you.

Culture, values, and work environments

Culture, values, and work environments should enhance the attainment of these purposes, but they are not ‘the’ purpose. I want you to be clear on the purpose. Achieving with excellence the purpose of your job should be a critical part of your personal brand. I am not suggesting that great places to work are not important. Of course, they are! However, a great place to work must be filled with people who do great work in the job at hand, and understand the future work that must be done. Those who do that work in ways that grow knowledge, skills and the right behaviors.

GREAT TO GOOD

In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins shares that you do this by creating a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship. This requires disciplined people. The right people on the bus. Followed by disciplined thought. Resulting in disciplined action towards an entrepreneurial goal. Collins reminds us that we must act in this order. Self-disciplined people, disciplined thought processes, and then disciplined action towards the goal. Too often we think we can create enough rules to have disciplined action without self-disciplined people and clear processes, but we can’t. (To remind yourself of the core principles of Good to Great, listen to Collins’ podcast on audiobooks. We know the companies he touts have changed, but his core principles provide the fundamental understanding of what is required. The book, podcast, or summary is well worth the read.

I want you to be that self-disciplined person.

The right person on the right bus. We bring you 3 articles this month. The first, as I mentioned earlier, is a continuation of exploring our model for career growth. We believe that being successful at work means knowing who you are and knowing what your company, your boss, and your teammates require from you. We have focused on work accomplishments, skills and knowledge, self-care and balance, expanding your network, and developing relationships. This month, we focus on building your skills and knowledge by nurturing a growth mindset.

As I close, I will remind you again that the work you do everyday matters. A lot. If we can help you get better at it, we are honored by that. See our services link above.

We love your feedback.
