Being Your Best Self

It’s time to make the critical shift from leading the business by yourself to leading an organization of people. At P2Excellence, we help you navigate the uncharted territories of organizational growth with clarity and confidence.

This weekend I slept in, something I rarely do, it felt luxurious! And then I had a leisurely coffee, played the piano for a few minutes and straightened my loom project – which obviously young hands had played with on Easter. I watered my plants. By the time I got to the shower, my head was on fire with creative thoughts.

This is what self-care and balance is – recognizing where our bodies, mind and spirit are and taking care of that. We can’t always, of course. Sometimes a deadline looms, and we have to muscle through. And we can. We are built for success and tired or not, weary or not, we can do great things. But we won’t have a lifetime of good things if we don’t learn to listen. If we don’t learn to respect the mind, body, and spirit who brought us to this opportunity.

Our writing series has been focused on Creating a Growth Mindset for you. We’ve talked about respecting what your job and company hired you to think about and to do. Recognizing you receive a paycheck for meeting their needs and expectations. We’ve talked about skilling up and learning up so that you become a stronger and more important value-add team member. We’ve asked you to play your position and to prepare in ways that cause you to be chosen for the next-level team. We’ve asked you to not be the player who spends his time arguing with the coach or dissing his/her teammates, or gossiping about the deficiencies of the team you selected to play for.

And now we are asking you to balance that outward momentum with inward reflection. Every season is different. What do you need to have joy in your work and in your life? To have a sense of being grounded?

We’ve chosen to focus on work and the self-care and balance that enables you to have the career opportunities and success you seek. There is a lot more to life than work. I know that, and so do you. But here, our focus for today is on work. You cannot do your best work on the job, if you don’t do your best work in learning to balance and take care of yourself. Figure out what you need – not what someone else needs. And make that happen. You deserve to be your best self.

Check out Lisa Moore’s commentary on Better Management of PTO days. And Shawn Devine’s article on Managing Career Development. Our Tuesdays goal is always the same – to provide you with a relaxed opportunity to reflect on leadership goals and behaviors and to consider simple ways to self-correct. It’s hard to do big things. But all of us can do small things that together have a big impact on strengthening our leadership.

As always, if we can help you grow leadership, strengthen a team, improve people process and/or support your HR department – I hope you will give us a call. We look forward to serving you.
