It’s time to make the critical shift from leading the business by yourself to leading an organization of people. At P2Excellence, we help you navigate the uncharted territories of organizational growth with clarity and confidence.
As we embark on this Leadership Journey in 2024, we’ve delved into the core areas of your responsibilities.
- We’ve explored how to develop your team into a highly creative, loyal, and collaborative group. A team that is not only self-starting but also deeply committed to the mission.
- We’ve discussed your role in bringing cross-functional teams together, ensuring that collaboration strengthens the entire organization.
- We’ve even touched on the importance of managing up, serving your boss in a way that makes them, and by extension, the organization better.
Now it’s time to turn the focus inward. You are already working hard—sometimes too hard. I say that because I want to remind you it is a slippery slope from loving your purpose and your work and being addicted to your work – the ego in overdrive.
The question before us today is this: What does it mean to truly own your role as opposed to merely doing your job (and maybe a few others’)?
Owning Your Role
Owning your role means honing in on the 3-5 critical impact responsibilities that only you, with your unique skills, power, and abilities, can execute. It also means knowing what you must let go of—tasks that, while important, can be effectively handled by others on your team. I had a mentor once who said for everything we add, we must subtract an equal amount.
This is where having the right team becomes essential so you can focus on these critical responsibilities. Owning your role also requires the right mindset—fully stepping into the role you now have, not clinging to the job you used to do. Finally, it involves practicing self-care so you lead from a place of strength, allowing you to be fully present in the moment while keeping an eye on the future.
Reflection
Take time to evaluate whether you are truly focusing on your critical impact responsibilities.
- Are you dedicating your energy to the tasks that only you can do?
- Are there areas where you are still holding on to responsibilities that could be delegated?
- Reflect on whether you have the right team in place to support you in letting go of tasks that others can handle.
- Consider if your mindset is aligned with your current role, or if you are still operating as if you were in a previous position.
- Finally, ask yourself if you are practicing the self-care necessary to lead effectively, ensuring you can be fully present while also planning for the future.
Your growth is essential—not just for you, but for your team, your boss, and the entire organization. Embrace this moment to refine your focus, conserve your energy, and prepare for the next stage in your leadership journey.
As you move forward, remember that growth happens one step at a time. Celebrate your progress, both big and small, and stay committed to refining your focus. Your leadership is evolving, and each reflection brings you closer to mastering the balance between impact and self-care.
