Thank you for sharing your Memorial Day weekend with us! As we know, Memorial Day is a day for remembering those who lost their lives serving in the U.S. Military. It’s important to pause, to remember. To give thanks. The remembrance was started following the Civil War and it soon expanded to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in WWI. And now we honor all who died serving the military. I’ve shared before that while growing up, my grandmother took me to tidy the graves of “our ancestors” on Memorial Day – a practice that is as ancient as time itself.
This year my intention is to reflect and to picture the young men and women throughout our history who believed in a cause, who felt a loyalty to their fellow soldiers, who loved their country and never came home to experience the fullness of life. I want to think about their hopes and desires. What they would expect of me and of us together? They, more than most, know the beauty in our potential and the perils of our carelessness.
Even though I no longer live near the graves of my ancestors, I want to stop and ask that same question – what do they expect of me? Like us, they helped shape the country we live in and hold so dear. What advice would they give now and what challenge would they offer?
Finally, I reflect on and give honor to those who died in the midst of this pandemic war. We didn’t always bring our best selves to this war-like effort. As we move forward, how can we contribute to the healing of our country? Where can we serve?
For many of us, Memorial Day also punctuates the beginning of Summer. We all need a real summer again! More opportunities to be outside with family and friends and to have fun! This Memorial Day, I plan to remember and to relish the day. Join me in doing the same!
Take care and know that you are well loved!
