Recently, I have been reading about the concept of neighboring . In a world where our social media – and media in general – seem to highlight how different we are or how angry we are about something, shouldn’t we really use those platforms to help build a better sense of community? Maybe now, as we enter the New Year, is a good time to give neighboring some careful consideration.
The term ‘neighboring’ is used in architecture to reference the creation of living arrangements that are conducive to building community. I like the word and it got me thinking about how we can be better neighbors in our work and home environments, and in how we use social media.
I think a lot of what divides us simply goes away when we think of someone as our neighbor. Good neighbors show respect and common care. Good neighbors are friendly, courteous and willing to help out when help is needed.
You don’t have to get too personal to be a good neighbor at work or at home. Taking the time to engage the people in your social and business circles will go a long way. Stop to chat, congratulate them on achievements, remember their name, acknowledge their family members or team members.
After all, neighboring doesn’t require an architecture, although a solid plan or course of action might be nice. It just requires stepping out and expecting good things. I am hoping 2019 turns out be a ‘neighboring’ kind of year for all of us!
