Elevate Your Team: Creating Impact and Loyalty – Part 2 of 3

by Nancy Vepraskas  - June 11, 2024

It’s time to make the critical shift from leading the business by yourself to leading an organization of people. At P2Excellence, we help you navigate the uncharted territories of organizational growth with clarity and confidence.

As we continue this Leadership Journey, we are now we are onto the role you have as the developer and leader of your own team. As we move forward, it's crucial to focus on the role you play as the developer and leader of your own team. Now, more than ever, it is essential to shine the spotlight on nurturing your team, as they are the backbone of your success.

To emphasize the importance of team dynamics, Patrick Lencioni in his book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" remarks, “Teamwork begins by building trust. And the only way to do that is to overcome our need for invulnerability.” This quote underlines the necessity of creating a transparent, supportive environment where vulnerabilities can be shared without fear, thus laying a strong foundation for teamwork and leadership.

Developing Your Employees: Nurturing Growth and Aspiration

Empowerment thrives in an environment of continuous learning and support. Tailor development plans to address both collective team needs and individual aspirations.

Write down each team member's unique strengths and areas for growth, and then work to provide them with the resources, training, and mentorship needed to thrive. Encourage curiosity and embrace every setback as a steppingstone toward mastery.

Ask Yourself:
  • How do I demonstrate trust in my team's capabilities and decision-making?
  • In what ways can I create a safer space for my team to discuss vulnerabilities and uncertainties?
  • Am I accessible enough that my team feels they can approach me with new ideas or potential issues?
  • How effectively am I leveraging the diverse perspectives within my team to foster innovation and solve problems?
  • Am I recognizing and promoting the right people at the right time?
  • Do I know each employee’s career goals?
  • Do my employees freely share their wins, losses, and expectations with me?
  • What developmental conversations, assignments, and educational opportunities are aligned with the organization's goals?
  • What support systems can be put in place to facilitate continuous learning and growth?

Use these questions to gain a deeper reflection on your leadership approach and the dynamic within your team. Don’t underestimate the critical role of trust and open communication to driving team success.

Next month, I’ll share some final thoughts on managing your team – having difficult conversations and making difficult decisions! Until then, I hope you take some time to reflect on your team’s development. And as always, if you need any help in this area, please reach out.
Warm regards,
