It’s time to make the critical shift from leading the business by yourself to leading an organization of people. At P2Excellence, we help you navigate the uncharted territories of organizational growth with clarity and confidence.
You know it when you see it.
A leader walks into the room and something shifts.
- The pace softens just a bit.
- People listen a little more carefully.
- Not because the leader said more.
- But because the leader is carrying the moment well.
What Gravitas Really Is
Gravitas has always meant weight.
Not heaviness.
Responsibility.
A sense that what is happening matters and that someone in the room is willing to carry it.
At this level, that someone is often you.

Gravitas
Gravitas shows up as:
- calm under pressure
- a measured response rather than a quick one
- steadiness when others feel urgency or uncertainty
It’s not personality.
It’s the visible expression of judgment, maturity, and integrity.
And people feel it long before they can name it.
Why It Matters Now
Earlier in your career, you were rewarded for energy, responsiveness, and getting things done.
That still matters.
But now something else is being asked of you.
People are watching:
- how you respond when things are unclear
- how you handle tension
- whether you rush, tighten, or stay steady
They may not say it out loud, but the question is there: Can I trust this leader with what matters?
Your answer is not in your words.
It’s in how you show up.
What Gets in the Way
I see this often with very capable leaders.
Not because they lack judgment but because the moment moves faster than their center.
When pressure rises:
- the voice speeds up or sharpens
- the need to solve overtakes the need to understand
- the first answer comes a little too quickly
Sometimes it looks like hesitation.
Sometimes it looks like force.
Neither is quite right.
Both are forms of reactivity.
And the room feels it.

Gravitas Begins Inside
Gravitas isn’t something you add in the moment. It shows up when you are settled enough to carry what’s happening.
You begin to notice:
- when you are rushing
- when you are tightening
- when you are speaking just to relieve pressure
And instead of pushing through, you pause.
Not dramatically. Just enough.

A Coach’s Advice
Let me offer something very practical.
When you feel anxious, unsure, or emotionally triggered…STOP.
Quietly. Without fanfare.
Turn inward.
- Take three or four slow breaths. Let your body catch up.
- Press your spine gently into the chair. Feel yourself lengthen a bit.
- Push your feet into the floor.
- Ground.
- Then begin to listen again.
Remember who you are in this role.
And bring that steadier, wiser version of yourself back into the conversation or the conflict.
You don’t have to rush.
You don’t have to prove.
You’ve got this.
Strong and Relaxed
Most leaders lean one way.
- Some need to stand stronger—to speak more clearly and stop giving the room away.
- Others need to stand easier— to slow down, listen longer, and stop closing things too quickly.
Gravitas sits somewhere in the middle.
Strong and relaxed.
Clear and open.
The Expectation
At this level, your internal state isn’t private. It becomes the atmosphere of the room. I expect leaders to notice that. To regulate themselves. To carry pressure without passing it on.
You don’t need all the answers. But you do need to be steady enough for others to think clearly. And you are.
A Tuesday Practice
Before your next important moment, pause.
Feel your feet.
Take one slow breath.
Let your shoulders settle.
Then ask: Am I settled enough to carry this well?
And enter from there.
Speak a little slower.
Let your voice land.
Leave just enough space.
Not louder.
Not softer.
Steady.
Stay with that this week,
