Greetings Dear Friends and Happy Thanksgiving!
I recently read that Thanksgiving is “the” favorite American holiday. This is in part because it’s the kickoff to the Holiday Season, it’s a fabulous time to gather with friends and family, and the food is fabulous – from turkey to pumpkin pie. Add to that lots of football and Macy’s big, annual Thanksgiving Day parade.
Traditions matter. They warm our hearts and give us a sense of community. It’s always interesting to figure out how to keep those important traditions while, at the same time, knowing things are constantly changing. Maybe you are like me, and you think that as a child when visiting grandparents at Thanksgiving everything was ALWAYS the same. Viewing it from a child’s eyes, I know I must have made up that perception. Because when I grew up and hosted or attended Thanksgiving events – and sometimes very elaborate events – Thanksgiving was always special and much different from my childhood perspective.
I am better these days about asking more questions in advance regarding Thanksgiving plans and constraints. And I am more flexible with the execution of the holiday. I suspect the same is true for you as well. Our pandemic disruption has given us pause. A chance to consider what really matters at the root of those traditions. The answer, of course, is love. The sense of belonging. The idea that we are a part of the gathering at this table and a part of table gatherings all over our country.
We can use this time to gather in peace. We can remember the keen importance of family and friends. We can help others have a brighter holiday. We can relish in our joy and focus on gratitude and grace.
Here is my wish for you this Thanksgiving:
Give thanks, eat too much, laugh too much, tell too many stories that warm the heart. Help clean up. Thank the people who are an important part of your life. Look at each person at your table and create an intention. Think about and share a thought or a story that will make each person feel valued.
We certainly value you. And we know that feeling valued makes good things happen.
Happy Thanksgiving!
